We the Wimbum students’ union -WISU, of the Donga-Mantung Division of the Northwest Region of Cameroon have been existing for 40 years now. We gather pupils, students and youths of all works of life each year for our annual conventions. We have more than 20,000 members both within and without the country and branches in all the 10 Regions of Cameroon as well as branches in the Diaspora.
Since the inception of WISU in august 1979, our prime objective was to make maximum sensitization about the importance of education of the Mbum child. Since then, we have been rotating within the 33 villages each year, teaching, sensitizing and orientating students, pupils and other learners of the importance of education and professional training. We equally give them support and encouragement to distinguish students pupils and schools each year. We also support and sponsor some of the less privilege and orphans in our society by giving some scholarships in the form of school fees, didactic materials, writing materials, generators to schools in suburb areas as well as drinking bucket to schools to step up sanitary conditions.
We have in the past years entered into community development in many aspects;
1. In the domain of agriculture and rural development WISU has opened a farm on a 10hectars piece of land in one of the villages called Mbawrong. Mbawrong is one of the 33 villages in Wimbum land with an exceptional climatic condition. This is the “WISU OPERATION GREEN HANDS” for development. We have as of last year planted some 600 palm tree nurseries and 500 plantain suckers. We intend to extend the farm by this year. It is also our wish that we harness the necessary funds in other to rear some hybridized species of pigs, sheep, cow as well as poultry farming. These projects will have a multiplier effect on both the union, the Wimbum community and the environment.
a) It is going to boost food security at home through the production of plantains, palm oil, kennels, brooms, dairy products as well as subsidiary products for other uses.
b) It is also going to be a source of employment, there are many expert and qualified youths ready to supply skilled and unskilled labour on the WISU farm estate. Presently we have 3 permanent staffs who are doing the tilling, ploughing, planting, weeding and spraying.
c) This project is also going to act as a source of income to the union. From the sales of product from the farm, revenue is going to enter the coffers of the union for more development back at home. All these and others are going to lead to the standard of living of the local population and Cameroon at large. It is also going to curb down social ills that comes as a result of unemployment like juvenile delinquency social unrest to name a few. It should be noted that it is going to lead to the development in the rural road network as farm to market roads shall be improved upon.
2. It is of paramount importance to note that WISU also does a lot in the domain of environmental and nature protection. To fight against climate change and its adverse repercussions we plant 500 environmental friendly trees, including Primus africana each year. We have planted in successive years in some of the villages; like Mbaa, Taku, Bongom, Wowo, Luh, Tallah, Tabenken, Rong. And this year we shall be planting in Nwangri village. This will fight against climate change and global warming.
3. WISU has also been able to contribute in tangible developments. We have constructed a number of public toilets in some villages to promote hygiene and sanitation. We have supported local community development by donating backs of cements for the construction of community halls and other public infrastructures. In 2016, WISU succeeded in harnessing a local stream in Rong village to provide water for two villages. We did this by installing pipes along the slope of the indented valley to provide water by pressure at the same time we planted trees around the water sheds and catchment areas of the village to ensure an all year round flow of water. In 2018 we donated over plastic chairs to the Njap palace hall.
4. One of the paramount activity of the union is sport. It gathers youths of both sexes regardless of age, profession and social status. We usually have hand and football, long and high jump, marathon and WISU cross country. These and others usually act as a pull factor for gathering more than 6000 people around the conventions grounds during this long vacation period as a leisure activity.
5. In the domain of culture, we showcase our culture. We promote it by educating youths of the importance of once culture. We do this through round table conferences, debates, talks and video projection as well as sketches. In 2011, we promoted our culture by projecting a film on our culture called WISU AT ALL COST. Its copies where handed to the ministry of culture and was also programmed in other TV channels.
